Stars Grill Room and Rooftop is located on Upper King Street, Charleston’s new downtown dining and entertainment district. It is housed in a restored historic Arts and Crafts building. Stars features its signature Carolina Cuisine in a stunning 1930’s style Grill Room and Walnut Bar. It also has Charleston’s only Rooftop Bar with a 360’ degree view of the city’s historic district and seven historic church Steeples. The Rooftop along with Stars’ second floor banquet and special events room has quickly become the cities go to destination for special celebrations, parties, meetings and weddings of all types.
Chef Vince Carino and Charleston’s best all-star culinary team have infused the Charleston food culture with what is now called “Carolina Cuisine” by critics and locals. This regional style of cooking is defined by personal relationships with farmers, fisherman, and many other varied purveyors from the bountiful food sources in the Lowcountry, Upcountry, and Appalachian Mountain Areas of the Carolinas. Another component of “Carolina Cuisine” is the use of live fire wood cooking on a grill and spit as well as flame baking in a Hearth Oven. Also this cuisine requires a flame fired flattop griddle or plancha for certain fish, meats and particularly local vegetables. These relationships and the products they provide as well these three cooking techniques provide the necessary basis for producing a menu now being called “Carolina Cuisine”.
The atmosphere and vision of Stars Rooftop & Grill Room was designed with a focus on its historic location at 495 King Street. The owners of Stars utilized the exterior and interior architectural integrity of the original building in the restaurant’s design. Stars was uniquely constructed preserving a large amount of the existing materials through the process of reuse, reclaim, restore and sustain. High curved booths, one-of-a-kind artisan built chandeliers and sconce lighting, reclaimed Appalachian Walnut wainscoting, a coffered ceiling and custom Terrazzo floors revive the craftsmen décor of the original design of the building.
The name “Stars” evolved during the first visit to the rooftop. The skyscape was extraordinarily clear with a perfect view of the stars, especially the Milky Way. The rooftop offers a stunning 360 degree view allowing guest to appreciate the unique, historic architecture of our Holy City.
Stars’ Grill Room was specifically designed for each guest to have a clear view of the exhibition kitchen and live fire wood cooking. A popular staple during the 1930’s and 40’s, a true grill room has a large circular booth directly in front of the cooking line known as the Chef’s Table.
The Chef’s Table at Stars seats 12 guests and can be reserved for a night of front row dining.
